"The Underline will transform the underutilized land below Miami’s Metrorail into a 10-mile linear park, urban trail and living art destination from the Miami River to Dadeland South."

Background

When Meg Daly broke both her arms and had to rely on walking & public transportation, she had an epiphany: “I thought we should turn this underused land into a community asset” says Meg. So Meg started Friends of the Underline, the organization responsible for this incredible, transformative project.

Friends of the Underline is working with world-renowned urban design & landscape architecture company, James Corner Field Operations, to totally transform the neglected 10-mile space into a world-class urban trail, economic engine, transportation solution, and canvas for artistic expression. James Corner Field Operations is the firm behind NYC’s famous Highline Park.

Although this project stretches from Brickell all the way to Dadeland, we’re going to give you the Scoop on Phase 1—aka the “Brickell” section of the project.

There are five zones, aka “rooms” that stretch from the River/7th St all the way to 13th st:
     1. The River Room
     2. The Gym
     3. The Promenade
     4. The Bike Lot
     5. The Oolite Room

The River Room & Gym from above: during construction
make a difference in your community

The River Room

The River Room will be the first zone, obviously located adjacent to the Miami River. There will be plenty of space to relax among nature as you watch the yachts and cargo ships pass. This zone will also have a large dog park for your best friends!

The Gym

Muscle Beach meets Brickell! This outdoor gym will be the best free place to get your sweat on in Brickell. It includes body weight equipment for stretching and strengthening, a flex-court for half-court basketball and kids soccer, and a 1/10 mile running track. No excuses now, come work out!!

The Promenade

This promenade starts the path that will connect all 10 miles of the Underline Park. There will be a biking path (that scooters can use too!) and a separate walking path to avoid accidents. It will be lined by trees and native South Florida plants, attracting all types of wildlife.

The promenade also includes a stage for community events and programming, game tables, plus a 50 foot long dining table to fit even the largest familias. And did we mention WIFI?

Let’s talk about programming. The Underline listened to what the community wanted! There will be health & wellness activities like yoga, opportunities for civic engagement, and cultural & educational programming. Movie night and live music performances will be regular occurrences.  There will even be tours of the Underline led by high school students from underserved communities.

The Bike Lot

Right by the entrance to the metro, there will be a place to park 130+ bikes and even fixing stations! There will also be a shared bike station and plenty of space for scooters.

The Oolite Room

The last section of the Brickell Backyard is the Oolite Room. Oolite is a type of limestone commonly found in Miami, with an abundance in this area. The Oolite room will feature a small dog park and one of the Underline’s 20 butterfly gardens.

I want to donate!
Art brightens up any city space, so needless to say, it will be a huge part of the Underline! Art brings people together, creates emotional connections, and delivers messages, so the Underline is the perfect platform for immersive, fun, and educational permanent and temporary art.

I don’t know about you, but we’re so excited for the connectedness and economic opportunities that The Underline will bring to Miami. Now is your chance to contribute to this incredible project and leave your footprint in the history of Miami.
