Reclaiming Old Florida, Stiltsville FishBar feels more like the seafood shacks along Highway 30A in the Panhandle or U.S. 1 in the Keys. Chef partner Jeff McInnis grew up in the former region and longed to recreate a bit of that rustic charm in Sunset Harbour. Share peel ’n’ eat royal red shrimp, which come by the half pound or pound to dunk in the house’s homemade cocktail sauce and “boggy bayou” aioli. Other regional throwbacks are coconut shrimp and smoked fish dip with house pickles and saltine crackers. Fruity, rum-based drinks are equally nostalgic, such as the Hurricane Betsy with pear and vanilla notes, or Bikini Club sweetened with passion fruit. Local catch of the day, the star here, even impresses native salty dogs.

MDD as MVP
There’s little reason to stray far from the Miami Design District this week. Its culture-filled calendar includes a one-time public presentation by National Young Arts Foundation alumni on October 7, at 7 p.m. As participants in the nonprofit’s artist-in-residence program, In Process: Homecoming, visual artists James Allister Sprang and Julie Zhu collaborate on a multimedia installation about racial and cultural tensions in the U.S. (pictured). Master sommelier Virginia Philip’s namesake wine shop and academy in West Palm Beach is ready for season. Along with offering 650 wines and master somm training, among numerous wine workshops for every level, the destination hosts themed meals and tastings. PB Catch’s executive chef creates Spanish specialties for a four-course luncheon with wine pairings on October 7. Italian wines from the Piedmont region are the focus for a tasting on October 11, followed by Bordeaux and Beaujolais from family-owned Domaines Richard on October 19. Duckhorn Vineyards fans should wait for its director of Estate viticulture’s visit on November 14. All three tastings start at 6 p.m. More services are craft beer classes, cellar management and delivery. Look for her new boutique at the Royal Poinciana Plaza in winter.

The new all-suite Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach finally opens October 10. The brand’s second location in Florida (the first being Brickell) boasts 290 suites with ocean views, private terraces, marble soaking tubs and separate showers, and Sub-Zero and Wolf kitchen appliances. Because of the locale’s marine heritage, a nautical theme centers on postmodernist architect Michael Graves’ cruise-ship design including balconies and porthole windows.
